Tectonic Blue
Arch 601 | Studio I | Fall 2019 | Pratt Institute
Instructors : Jonas Coersmier
An introduction to speculative design, the studio evolves through material experiments and form morphosis using various media, massing exercises and representation techniques. The resultant composite language is in turn used to design an enclave for artist of choice on the bank of Governor's Island, New York.
The initial form is a found foam piece. The form is analyzed to determine a visible language of its morphology to create multiple aggregate iteratives of the object. Plaster of Paris, foam, resin, pasta, plastic pearls, dies, pigments among others constitute the material palette for the material experiments to create various visual & tactile qualities like transparency, opacity, smoothness and porousity.

Composite Object
Both the form & material study tracks culminate into one composite object. A simple interlocking system developed with respect to the morphology of the composite object and the individual parts help the object stay together. This fabrication process informs the next course of action for the studio.
Tectonic Landscape
The individual parts along with the interlocking arranged in various configurations creates a complex teconic landscape. Some of the parts of the composite objects accomodate as stilts conveniently for the riverside landscape on Governor's Island. The tectonic landscape has spaces encase amidst the planes and volumes of the objects. Various functional spaces are carved out or housed in this landscape to accomodate the artist of choice.
Tectonic Blue
The tectonic landscape with its surface features informed choice of selecting new media artist & designer as the choice of artist for the residence and the enclave.
The many surfaces provide ample canvas for the media artist to project or visualize his creations and the many complex spaces enclosed in the landscape provide spaces for interactive installations revolving around various media catering to various senses of the visitors.
The more dense & enclosed spaces are alloted for the artist residence and permanent gallery spaces.
